The Cultural Committee is varied in a sense that it covers a range of cultural events, competitions, tours and adds some drama for CWA members.

It continues to be a popular committee and events are coordinated for members to participate in, from drama to art, to touring a city and learning more about its cultural mix and make up.

Competitions are run during the course of each year and these CWA activities are sponsored by our partner Scott and Broad who have been loyal supporters of the Association for many years.

Cultural Book Guidelines

The following criteria should help you when compiling your Cultural Record Book, which is exactly what it is, a record of your Branch's activities throughout the year. Any overlap with International work should involve the Culture only of the Country of Study. The recommended book is the GNS Project Book 201, comprising of 24 pages (12 leaves). These are avaliable from most newsagents or the Cultural Committee.

The Contents (numeric order) should be in the front cover, or the Index (in alphabetical order) inside the back cover, either is permissible. Photographs should be limited and Books must include the name of the Branch and Group. The Committee is only too willing to send the Correct Book to you should you have any difficulty in obtaining one in your area.

The Books shall be judged on the following:

  1. Presentation and Content - 30 points
  2. Member Participation - 30 points
  3. Spelling - 15 points
  4. Neatness -10 points
  5. Presentation - 10 points
  6. Contents or Index - 5 points

'Member Participation' will be judged on those who contribute to the content and who participate in Cultural activities at Branch level and Group level; keeping in mind it is permissible for one Member to compile the Book. Computer work or hand written work will be judged equally.

The closing date for Cultural Book entries is 15 November each year.

State Scrapbooking Competition

Guidelines for judging are that each piece must be 10 leaves (meaning each leave is front and back used)/20 pages and that the page size is 30cms x 30cms.

There are two sections: one for individual entrants and one for an entry from a Branch. Best Branch book to be judged at Group level, then forwarded to a Group Representative for judging at February Executive Meeting 2009. Groups will also be allowed an individual entry at State level.

Judges will have to take the following into account when they make their choices.

  • Photography is the all important element in scrapbooking, so photographic quality is essential.
  • Scrapbooking is also about creativity, so the creative interpretation of the subject matter is another consideration.
  • Likewise creative use of decorative elements and layout is most important.
  • The use of journaling should show elements of both function and decoration - in other words we should be able to follow the story as well as having a beautiful book to view.
  • Mostly double pages should compliment each other so that the book is easy to view.

To conclude, we are looking for a book that gives people something interesting to look at that informs them of what the photos are all about and that is so beautiful that they will wish to rush out and start their own scrapbook .

There is no age limit, however the entrant must be a member of CWA.  They can be a junior member but please indicate that the entrant is a junior or if any pages of a branch book have been completed by a junior member.

The cover may be decorated or not, however this is not taken into consideration when the judging is done.  Except with regard to the general overall appearance of the book.

The closing date for Scrapbook entries is 15 November each year.
